In Big Hand

Some days you feeling like you’re running up against the proverbial buzzsaw.

You raise with A-Q and get a call from J-10. You like your chances until the flop comes 10-10-x.

Damn you, Lady Luck.

Then you raise with K-J. This time, Q-10 calls.

And the flop hits the board with dead-eye precision — Q-Q-X.

Damn you, Lady Luck.

Why bother? Why not just find a friendly craps game, make a few big “don’t” bets and take your chances?

Then a few laps later at wsop.com, you are on the button with Ks-7s. There’s the two blinds and three limpers and you decide to call.

The flop comes down 10-7-7 with two diamonds. Congratulations — you’ve finally hit a flop. Well, if you can call flopping trips hitting a flop.

It’s checked around to you and you decide to trap. (Note: with a diamond draw on board, this is not normally a very astute play. In fact, it’s not an astute play here either.)

The turn comes and bad news arrives — it’s the diamond eight, completing the flush.

Damn you, Lady Luck. Damn you!

This time the big blind bets out, slightly over betting the size of the pot. There’s a call, then another call, then still another call.

You’re thinking, hey, maybe I can hit the king. The price isn’t really right but maybe if you figure implied odds and a potential payoff, it’ll work. So you call, rooting hard for the wsop.com dealer to toss out the king on the river.

There’s the sound of a card hitting the virtual felt and the screen flashes. It’s a seven. The case seven, obviously.

The early position player pushes all-in. The others fold and there’s nothing left for you to do except call and show your quads.

The screen flashes again — she had pocket eights, turned a full house on a flushing board and ended up with sevens full of eights.

On the screen, a giant stack of chips moves to your avatar.

And if the king had fallen on the river? You would have made sevens full of kings and lost to eights full of sevens.

Lady Luck, you are such a sweetheart.
