In Big Play

Casting about for a play on April 30, we check out the blog of a well-known handicapper. He’s all over an MLB game at +120 with some sound logic. He’s upfront that this is a clear play against the public. All of this makes sense, but by now it’s late in the afternoon. And his sharp side has already gone final. And it’s a loser.

No matter.

We liked the Spurs in the NBA anyway. It’s a 5:35 p.m. start time so we have plenty of time. The board says -6.5 and that seems reasonable. Without having volumes of stats, we don’t mind home chalk in the first game of an NBA series, and the Spurs seem to be cruising.

So we call out the number, which is -7 by now, to the ticket writer, but that’s OK, too. We look up a little later, and the Spurs have jumped out to an early lead.

They have a comfortable cushion at halftime and cruise to an easy 124-92 win.

So we never really sweat the game.

Is it that easy? Well, rarely. It was just one of those days when the public was right, and the sharps — at least one of them — were wrong.

And today at least, we get to cash a ticket.
