The new Metropolitan Police Department substation in Summerlin is seen Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019. It will open in January.

A new Metropolitan Police Department substation in Summerlin will open in January, according to an employee in the department’s Northwest Area Command.

The new building is on 4.75 acres west of the 215 Beltway near Far Hills Avenue at the corner of Carriage Hill and Redpoint drives.

The new building will be the department’s 10thpolice headquarters and is designed to serve the master-planned Summerlin community.

R&O Construction was general contractor on the project. Construction was largely complete in September, according to Philip DiGiacomo, marketing manager for R&O.

“We are excited for the Summerlin community,” DiGiacomo said in a text message.

The new substation is designed to relieve the workload on the department’s Northwest Area Command, which currently patrols the northwest Las Vegas Valley and Summerlin.

Plans have called for the 24,000-square-foot facility to house about 168 commissioned police personnel and 16 civilian staffers.

Plans also call for Capt. Sasha Larkin, who currently heads the Northwest Area Command, to move to the new Summerlin facility to head operations when it opens in January.

The employee who confirmed the January opening could not comment on staffing plans.

The project was funded by The Howard Hughes Corp. on donated land and will be deeded to Metro, according to an earlier statement from the corporation. A dollar cost was not available.

“The relationship with The Howard Hughes Corporation and Las Vegas Metro Police Department was excellent, which made for a very smooth process,” DiGiacomo added.

The Howard Hughes Corp., which is headquartered in Dallas, owns and oversees the master-planned Summerlin community as well as other communities and projects across the U.S.

Summerlin consists of about 22,500 acres. Its population is about 124,000, according to recent estimates.
