Life is harsh when you’re down on your luck and can’t find a decent job. In the “The Brass Teapot,” John and Alice are just that couple. John’s career as a telemarketer is going nowhere and Alice can’t find work despite graduating in the top-third of her class. Then quirky things happen in this 2012 release from a half-dozen production companies. Alice, played by the alluring Juno Temple, discovers a brass teapot with an extraordinary power — it spits out big bills when its holder feels pain. How much pain would you be willing to endure for a wad of Benjamins? Alice and John soon find out as they endure physical abuse and pad their coffers. They are also hunted, robbed and attacked by others who have learned the mystical powers of the teapot. The small-town couple does some research and discovers more about the history of the teapot. And they learn how interwoven love and money sometimes can become. “If you had to choose, would you pick me or the teapot?” a suspicious John asks Alice. Alice has to think about that. Most people would if they had a teapot that could crank out hundred-dollar bills at a mere gash in the skin. “The Brass Teapot” takes a perhaps predictable swerve toward violence as the story unfolds. But this is a charming, funny, offbeat tale that will regale over its 101-minute running time. Rated 3.5 stars out of a possible five stars here at Double Gut Shot!
